Young AIDS Migrants in Southern Africa

Many young people in southern Africa engage in AIDS-related migration. Research conducted with urban and rural-based children in Malawi and Lesotho revealed that children are commonly sent to live with relatives resident elsewhere. They move in order to receive care, to care others, or to support their own livelihoods. Migration has a variety of impacts on young people, many of which are exacerbated by the effects of the epidemic. It is advocated that policy approaches for AIDS-affected children take into account the interests of children themselves and the needs of households that accommodate them

Considerations in the placement of phase calibration tones

In the use of tones to calibrate unwanted instrumental phases for very long baseline interferometry experiments, certain problems exist which are related to the placement of these phase calibrator tones. (1) A bias exists in an analytically generated stopping function used during correlation if its frequency satisfies the following condition; f = (f sub s)x(m)/n, where f sub s = sampling frequency, m = any integer, and n = any odd integer. (2) Due to the quantized representation of sine waves in the stopping function, odd harmonics of the fundamental frequencies are generated. Several mechanisms are available through which these harmonics can cause errors in the residual phase extracted from the recorded tones. (3) When multiple tones are injected into a pass band, intermodulation products can occur. The magnitude of these effects is discussed along with strategies designed to avoid them

Biofuels: Political/Economic Boondoggle or Energy Salvation for Western States?

Nearly all western states lack comparative advantages for producing corn for ethanol and oilseeds for biodiesel. Despite this disadvantage, most western states have legislated incentives for production of biofuels. Unfavorable changes in price relationships, high transportation costs for imported feedstocks, and tight credit markets in 2008 and 2009 led to bankruptcies and plant closures at a disproportionate rate in the western biofuel industry. Policy makers in western states are advised to fund research and development for bioenergy and biofuel feedstocks in which they have a comparative advantage.
